Sacred Square

In Collaboration With Lilibeth Arreola Caballero
The Sacred Square is a campus comprised of three buildings, specifically designed to accommodate religious art in East Garfield Park, Chicago, IL. The project aimed to promote religious diversity and engage with the local community by creating opportunities for interaction and activity. These were accomplished by forming a narrative for each user's path, using natural elements in the design to guide them through the space. A challenge faced in the project was not to be specific to one religion and still cater to the idea of a sacred space. This was solved by using the similarities of different faiths and applying them to the architecture from a neutral perspective, such as the symbolic tree, materiality, flowing water along the path, form, etc. The center core is a large stone box used as an archive while the art is displayed in an elevated gallery for public viewing. Beneath the gallery is the central auditorium for engaging the community through events. The exterior landscape is used similarly by providing a pond for ice skating during the winter and winding paths for casual walks. The program of the smaller building is intended for an admin while the larger one contains residency for traveling artists.
